Have you ever wondered, why your hair is dry, frizzy or brittle? Or, why it is too oily? Many people apply oils to their hair without knowing the full potential use of each product. All oils are not the same and should be treated differently. First, you must observe the characteristics of your hair, research the product and method in which you apply it.
Here is why oils should be treated differently. When dealing with natural hair there are two categories, sealants, and moisturizing oils. Sealants are used to lock or seal moisture within the hair shaft and moisturizing oils job is to provide hydration for your hair. Furthermore, if your hair is too oily or dry, you’re applying the products wrong.
How and when do you apply these products?
Well, if your natural hair is dry or brittle you can either use the LOC (Liquid Oil Cream) or LCO (Liquid, Cream, Oil) method.
You can use water or any liquid product first on your hair to saturate it. Apply moisturizing oil(s) then a sealant to keep your hair healthy and thirst-free.
If your hair is very oily you can refrain or use a small amount of oil/product and use other helpful hair-care methods.
Hair oils are very beneficial to ALL hair types (short natural hair to long natural hair).
Below is a list of top sealants and moisturizing oils.
In conclusion, there are many uses for oils on natural hair. Essential oils are also good for hair growth and maintenance. The oils vary from peppermint, cedarwood, and rosemary. Personally, the best carrier oil for natural hair is castor oil. Castor oil has been in my daily hair stable for than 5 years. Additionally, it has many benefits and is a GREAT sealant.
